Brand Spotlight: Merrel

Merrell is a leading American footwear company known for crafting high-performance hiking boots and outdoor shoes. Founded in 1981 by former Rossignol executives Clark Matis and John Schweizer, the brand partnered with master bootmaker Randal Ivan Merrell, whose custom boots were renowned for their quality and craftsmanship.
The Birth of a Hiking Icon
In 1983, Merrell launched its first hiking boots, combining expert craftsmanship with modern manufacturing techniques. These boots quickly gained recognition for being rugged, comfortable, and affordable—earning praise from Backpacker Magazine as “the most comfortable and functional boots in North America.”
That same year, Merrell introduced a women’s-specific last, ensuring a better fit and performance for female hikers—an innovation that set the brand apart in the outdoor footwear market.
